Twenty-four years ago,
PEI’s LGBTQ+ community raised its voice and held a march to proclaim their pride, as an important and unique community! Today, their voices have grown into a week-long celebration with various events attracting people from all over the Maritimes and even across Canada!
The voice of our cities LGBTQ+ community has been there at important moments, including the legislation of equal marriage and the addition protections for gender identity under provincial law. Standing alongside us have been our allies, partners, and supporters just like you!
We are PEI’s longest running pride festival, and a member of the national and international associations of pride festivals: Fierte Canada pride and Interpride. Our organization PRIDE PEI INC. (formerly known as the Abegwit Rainbow Collective) Is a registered non-profit corporation founded on October 21st, 2015 to unite the voices of various LGBTQ+ peoples across the island in the production of PEI’s annual Pride Festival.
While a vast number of things have improved, we’ve all seen the news over the past year; bullying, discrimination, and hate crimes still exist in our community. There is still important work to be done.
